In this paradise, the natural greatness is expressed by the mountainous mass and impressive gorges in the south, the picturesque Venetian harbour with its Byzantine treasures of the past in the north and the countless sandy beaches of exotic beauty east and west of the city. The archeological sites, museums, Byzantine churches and monasteries, the examples of traditional and neoclassic architecture, the renowned Market of the 19th century, the variety of charming shops in combination with the warm hospitality of the residents create a unique area for recreation and sight-seeing. In short, Chania offers you everything you have ever wished for.

Old Town of Chania

Chania--the favourite hang-out of the pirates. The four hundred years of Venetian occupation has deeply influenced the architecture of the old town, with its narrow lanes, moats and the Venetian castle in the harbour. The Venetian town, which was built on the ruins of Ancient Kydonia, was once the capital of the whole island. The Venetian castle, Kastelli, which was built on the ancient acropolis of Kydonia, includes the palace of the Venetian Administrator, as well as the villas and mansions of the Venetians. This is where the Turkish administrators, pashas and beys found shelter during the Turkish occupation. You should visit the church of Saint Francis, the biggest Venetian church of the city which now houses the archeological museum. The nautical museum with its heirlooms and exhibits is situated at the beginning of the harbour, at the Firka Fortress.
