Chania Villas, Sightseeing & Nightlife In Crete

In the suburb of Halepa, one can visit the palace of the governors and the villas, as well as the house of Eleftherios Venizelos. Wake up, have a cup of coffee, enjoy the magical view and stroll around the city. There is no chance of boredom. The Tomb of Venizelos, who was the soul of the revolution, is on the way to the bay. From here, one can enjoy the beautiful view of the city and coastline. The ruins of important, ancient cities are spread throughout the area.

The ancient city of Aptera, one of the most significant ancient cities, covers a large area and a significant part of the enormous walls can still be seen today. A small chapel dedicated to Apollo, a Roman theatre and arched reservoirs can be seen here.

One can visit the island of Gramvousa, known as the island of the pirates from Kissamos. The giant walls surrounding the Venetian castle are built on a huge vertical rock.

The longest gorge of Europe, the Samaria gorge, is situated at Omalos. The beauty of the eighteen kilometer hike is well worth the physical challenge. It has been declared a natural reserve and the hike is only permitted during the summer months. Here, the beauty of the wild creates a breathtaking view.

Southwest, is the island of Elafonissi, a stunning coast of brilliant white dunes and pink sand made of powdered coral.

Sfakia is one of the very few places where no conqueror has ever set foot. It is built on a rock and is naturally protected by the surrounding mountains. Its inhabitants held on to their independence at all times. The island of Gavdos is located opposite of Sfakia, the southern most point of Europe. According to mythology, this is where Calypso held Odysseus and his companions hostage for seven years.

Frangokastelo is located approximately ten kilometers east of Sfakia. It is not only the fortress which amazes but the legend as well. On the 17-18 of May, the great Turkish army exterminated the small army of Daliani. Whoever finds himself there at that time will witness the strange and fantastic phenomenon of the "Drosoulites". The prefecture of Chania is well known for its endless natural beauty.
